Janne Lautanala, Chief Ecosystem And Technology Officer

Shaping The Future Of Traffic With Digital Innovation

Janne Lautanala

Traffic Technology Authority

My Professional Journey to Fintraffic Leadership

I am a technology leader specializing in digital transformation, IT strategy and data-driven ecosystems. With a background spanning telecommunications, digital services and mobility, I have led large-scale IT and business solutions, driving customer-centric innovation.

Before joining Fintraffic as Chief Ecosystem and Technology Officer (CETO), I held leadership roles in IT, innovation management and consulting sectors, including at Accenture, Avanade and Wärtsilä in the Nordics and the Asia-Pacific region.

Driving Digitalization And Smart Mobility At Fintraffic

Fintraffic has embraced digitalization, data sharing and automation to enhance traffic management and safety across all modes of transportation. By leveraging real-time data, AI-powered analytics and predictive technologies, we improve traffic flow, minimize disruptions and enhance situational awareness for operators and travelers.

Key initiatives include:

- Open Traffic Data Platform—Enabling seamless data exchange between public and private stakeholders to support smart mobility services.

- AI & Automation in Traffic Control— Enhancing safety and efficiency through predictive analytics and automated decision-making.

- Connected & Cooperative Mobility— Facilitating vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2X) communication for safer, more efficient transport networks.

As CETO, I have a clear role in shaping Fintraffic’s technology strategy, digital innovation and IT investments. My focus is on modernizing infrastructure, scaling data-driven solutions and fostering industry collaboration to build a safer, smarter and more sustainable traffic data ecosystem. Through strong ecosystem partnerships and digital transformation, we are shaping the future of intelligent traffic management in Finland.

Challenges In Adopting Emerging Traffic Technologies

Integrating emerging technologies into traffic management systems presents several challenges:

- Data Interoperability & Standardization—Traffic systems involve multiple stakeholders, each using different data formats and protocols. Ensuring seamless data exchange and interoperability across systems is complex.

- Cybersecurity & Data Privacy—As traffic management becomes more connected, protecting systems from cyber threats and ensuring data privacy is critical to maintaining trust and operational safety.

- Legacy System Integration—Many existing traffic infrastructures are built on outdated technologies, making it difficult to integrate AI, automation and IoT solutions without costly overhauls.

- Scalability & Reliability—Emerging technologies, such as AI-driven traffic control and autonomous vehicle support, require high availability, real-time data processing and resilient infrastructures to operate at scale.

- Regulatory & Ethical Considerations— Implementing emerging technologies raises questions about liability, ethics and compliance with evolving regulations.

The Future Of Traffic Management Relies On AI, Automation And Connected Mobility. By Embracing Digitalization, Data-Driven Ecosystems And Strong Industry Collaboration, We Can Create Safer, Smarter And More Efficient Transportation Networks For The Next Generation.

At Fintraffic, we tackle these challenges by investing in open data ecosystems, enhancing cybersecurity, modernizing IT infrastructure and collaborating with public and private partners to ensure seamless, safe and scalable adoption of smart mobility solutions.

Future Trends In Mobility And Traffic Safety

The future of traffic management is driven by AI, automation and connected mobility, creating safer, smarter and more efficient transportation systems. Key trends include:

- AI & Predictive Analytics—AI-powered traffic forecasting and real-time analytics will enhance incident prevention, congestion management and decision-making.

- Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) Communication— Connected vehicles will communicate with infrastructure, pedestrians and other road users, improving traffic flow and reducing accidents.

- Autonomous & Smart Mobility Solutions— Increasing adoption of self-driving vehicles, drones and automated public transport will transform urban mobility.

- Digital Twins & Simulation Models—Virtual traffic environments will enable authorities to test policies, optimize infrastructure and predict disruptions before real-world implementation.

- Open Data & Ecosystem Collaboration—Greater data sharing between public and private sectors will support innovative mobility services, multimodal transport and real-time traveler information.

At Fintraffic, we are investing in these technologies, modernizing digital infrastructure and fostering industry collaboration to create a future where mobility is safer, more sustainable and seamlessly connected.
